Requirement Management

What is a requirement?
To quote the Institute for Configuration Management (ICM) in Phoenix, Arizona: „A requirement is not a requirement, until it is documented, validated and released”

What is requirement management?
Information management is the core of requirement management and includes organisation, traceability, analysis and visualization.

Advantages of requirement management?
The most important point of origin for the product team is to assess the requirements of the customer correctly. An comprehensive understanding of the technical details and conditions under which a product is to be developed and deployed is indispensable for the identification of the requirements.

These criteria make it possible for the analysis team to improve their understanding of the customer's requirements and thus identify where problems might occur at an early stage. The goal is to integrate a range of requirements and to decide whether or not they can be realized the introduction phase already – not later during the test and certification phase.

Moreover we learn which effects certain characteristics can have on the development process. Thus one can identify and correct potential difficulties faster before you commit to an approach which then turns out to be infeasible.

So why requirement management?
Requirements have to be defined exactly before the attempt to produce a product or to develop software can be made. If the correct requirements are not known, the right product or the right software cannot be designed or produced. As a result the produced product will not satisfy the customer/user.

Statistics show that 60% of the product failures already emerge at the stage of developing and analysing requirements, i.e. these errors already occur in the design phase. Although there is always a possibility to correct the gravest errors, most product developers or their managers often decide to rush headfirst into the construction phase and then develop the wrong product. Thus they pay a much higher price for their product as if they had collected all requirements and administrated them correctly right from the start.
