CMII is a process which covers all areas of configuration management (CM). It is neutral as far as sector and tools are concerned and can therefore be applied to any company. At the core of CMII is a closed change process. This change process ensures that first of all the requirements are defined and then the products are updated accordingly. CMII's methods provide a complete infrastructure for running busisness processes.

The implementation of CMII can be automated with the corresponding software. Several tools for configuration management (CM), requirement management and product data management (PDM) are available.
